Flying V Group Co-Founder and Partner, Robb Fahrion, recently appeared on BluHorn’s ‘Marketing for Your Future’ podcast with Mike White. Below is a transcription of the video above:

Mike White: Welcome back to ‘Marketing for Your Future’ on BluHornTV. I am your host Mike White on ‘Marketing for Your Future’ and we are travelling the countryside to try to find the top experts in digital media, traditional, creative, copywriting, and the likes. Joining us today we have Robb Fahrion from Flying V Group in Irvine, CA. Welcome to the program.

Robb Fahrion: Thank you. Thanks so much for having me. I really appreciate it.

Mike: So, Flying V, tell me about how it got started and the services you offer.

Robb: Sure! My brother and I started the company about four years ago and we have a third partner now. We are a digital marketing company, full-scale in that we provide website development, website design, search engine optimization, paid ad buying, as well as, social media marketing. We are able to bring all services from a digital perspective under one roof for our clients and handle their entire digital marketing strategy.

Mike: What is the trend right now in websites? Are they being custom developed? Are they on WordPress or Wix? What platform do you see most people going to?

Robb: We’re doing about, I’d say,  80-85% of our websites on a WordPress build. A lot of our clients that we have generally require more informational based sites with less custom design. Other than that, the rest of our projects are on some sort of custom build or Shopify or Magento, if they are integrating some sort of e-commerce.

We tend to stay away from these quick website builders that are available like Wix, Weebly, Squarespace. We just feel as a search engine optimized forward firm that we get a little hand tied with the technical SEO aspects that we can control on those close sourced software platforms. So, we prefer the open source software that allows us to make the configurations and adjustments that we need.

Everything is not perfect and there is no out-of-the-box solution that is perfect for each and every client. And so, having a WordPress build or a custom build or even Shopify/Magento, those do really well to allow us the configurations we need from a search engine optimization standpoint.

Mike: Finish this sentence, “Every website…”

Robb: Every website must be technically configured for search engine optimization. It is definitely important for the design, from a conversion rate standpoint, all of that is very, very important. But when we are looking at a site, we are looking at what is underneath the hood.

I always say that you can have a website that looks like a Ferrari on the front end, but then we pop the hood open and it is running on a four-cylinder engine, which does not support. So, there is a lot that goes on underneath the hood that people do not see that are probably the most important pieces when you consider what the most important piece of the website is, which is to get exposure, traffic, and eyeballs to your website.

Mike: So, when you start a website, do you guys start with a template or do you spend the time to go do the custom design work behind it?

Robb: It is really up to the client and what their design flavor is. If they are looking for something that is pretty unique then we will start with Photoshop PSD designs that get built into a WordPress framework. Or, there are a lot of template WordPress themes that are available that still allow a lot of flexibility to get you to a custom look and feel even though it might not necessarily be an actual ‘custom template’.

The decision really just depends on the client, depends on the complexity or the functionality that they are looking for. I don’t think you can go wrong either which way. Obviously, that custom build has a few more requirements when getting that built.

Mike: The younger generation coming up that is getting into the tech space, and you realize everyone is a CEO nowadays online. You’ve got all of these people that are 14 to 16 years old with the title CEO.

What is a piece of advice you would give them knowing after you started your company that you went and had some challenges. What is a good piece of advice to give to the generation below you that wants to start their own company?

Robb: I would say, “Get your hands dirty.”

What I mean by that is with my company I just started learning how to build websites on my own. There is so much good content and information that is readily available online nowadays, whether it be YouTube videos, online courses, articles, and how-to-dos.

Whatever it is that you are interested in, immerse yourself and dive right in. Challenge yourself and learn. It is okay to make mistakes. That is how you are going to lay a foundation and have the ability to see everything from the top down when you are the CEO or the Partner.

At the end of the day, I still have to know how the website works and how it is built in order to provide the bigger strategy that is going to drive business for our clients. That would be my best piece of advice. Find what you are interested in and go out and get started tomorrow.

The sooner you can get going the sooner you are going to learn and make those mistakes. Then, the sooner you are going to be able to figure out how to fix those mistakes.

Mike: Well Robb, I appreciate you joining us on the program today. To find out more about Robb and Flying V Group, visit us at BluHorn.com. We look forward to seeing you next time on BluHornTV.
