Google significantly considers local prominence when determining rankings in Google Business Profiles and local search results.
Additionally, Dubai’s diverse population leads to substantial search volumes for specific, often overlooked, long-tail keywords. For businesses in Dubai, targeting these keywords can be a highly effective strategy to attract potential customers searching for niche products or services. By focusing on these long-tail keywords and optimizing content accordingly, businesses can capture a significant portion of the market that might otherwise be missed.

Ranking in Dubai with .ae Domains
We analyzed ten competitive search terms in Dubai to determine how often .ae websites appeared on the first page of Google results. In about half of the cases, no .ae websites appeared on the first page. In the remaining instances, one or two .ae websites ranked in the top ten, with only one search term showing four .ae domains on Google’s first page.
The data suggests that having a .ae domain is not necessary to rank well for most keywords in Dubai. However, it’s worth noting that country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) like .ae can provide a slight advantage in local search rankings, all else being equal. This might be due to the relative newness of the .ae domain extension, meaning fewer companies have adopted it—though this could change over time.
Interestingly, we found that .ae domains were more prevalent in Google’s paid search results than in organic results for many queries. This could indicate that paid marketers in Dubai are more likely to utilize .ae domains, possibly due to a better understanding of local SEO practices.
Moreover, when Amazon entered the Middle East market and acquired Souq.com, they chose to use Amazon.ae as their primary domain in the UAE, even though Souq.com did not originally use a .ae domain. Similarly, when Amazon launched Amazon.sa in Saudi Arabia in June 2020, they opted for a country-specific domain.
