How to Use Pop-Ups to Generate More Website Leads for Your Business

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Pop-ups are small windows inside website pages that pop up without a users’ permission. They are seen as one of the most distracting and debatable approaches to attract users for lead generation. Pop-ups are labeled as questionable because pop-ups can either improve your user experience or worsen it to a state that ensures the website visitor will never be seen or heard from again.

If you have experienced pop-ups, then you may know that they can be the most disturbing element of any website that prevents its readers from reading the content or viewing the page they wish to. The idea of pop-ups is that they are meant to force the visitors to fill out forms for subscription or click on the pop-up to achieve a more beneficial action before visitors can move ahead to other pages.

Pop-ups, by design, encourage distraction from the current task by triggering a disruption of the user’s workflow throughout the site. However, according to many experts, whether pop-ups are a distraction or attraction depends on the implementation on the website. Let’s look at how you can turn a distraction into an attraction with this article that covers how to use pop-ups to generate more website leads for your business.

How do you feel when you watch a fascinating show on your television and you are interrupted by annoying commercial ads? Though most of the time they annoy you, some ads bring a smile to your face and you like them so much that you discuss it with your family and friends and even ask others to watch it.

The goal of pop-ups is to convert that distraction into attraction. Sometimes, pop-ups that clearly offer immense value are generally acceptable. If you are looking to add a pop-up to your site, make sure it is one that will provide the user something that they will not want to miss. Pop-ups that appear instantaneously asking if you want to subscribe are worthless because how does the user even know whether or not there is any value on the site?

Going back to the commercials, let’s find out what those do that become the talk of the town to convert distraction into an attraction and how you can apply those same characteristics to your pop-up efforts.

Appearance Matters Most

Note, the first impression is quite possibly the last impression. So, appearance plays a vital role in every action you take when designing a pop-up strategy. The very first thing that visitors notice on pop-ups is their appearance and not what words are on them.

It is essential to spend time with how your pop-ups look and how you can make them more appealing. Use photographs and designs that can draw the attention of your visitors and prompt them to look further by clicking. Use attractive color schemes and combine them with items of interest like seasonal discount coupons and offers. There are limitless ways to compel your users. Use the ones that give you the best results after testing out different methods.

Do Not Overdo Your Pop-Ups

Overdoing anything can be bad. So, limit your use of pop-ups. It would help if you had some limits since overuse can irritate your users and you might end up losing your regular visitors too. You should know where to draw the line so that they find your popups interesting and not disturbing. In most pop-up configurations you can limit the number of pop-ups to one pop-up per visitor. Adding pop-ups to every page on your website or even just while the visitor browses your site can lead you to disaster.

Allow Your Visitors to Decide

Give your visitors the option to exit the pop-up easily. Do not force them to click on the pop-up or fill out the form on the pop-up. They will if they want to!

Sites that force users to fill out forms or perform an action rarely get their visitors back again if this is not the desired action. Visitors may choose to close the website altogether rather than acting according to the wish of the site.

Also, be sure to set a cookie for the pop-up. Setting a cookie means that the user will not be served the pop-up again if they visit the website within a specified period. Doing so can help to ensure that you will not be annoying the visitor over and over again!

Time and Relevance is Important

The last thing you want to do is annoy visitors. So, keep the following points in mind while designing your pop-ups. Experts say that visitors tend to leave websites within 5 seconds of load. So, give your visitors this much wait time before you push your pop-ups on your sites. It is always better to wait and see if you have an engaged visitor before you potentially annoy and lose the visitor altogether.

Relevance is another crucial factor that you should consider while making popups. Your pop-ups should be relevant to what your website talks about or something pertinent to the page the visitor is browsing. Visitors should be able to find relevance between what is showing on pop-ups and what they assume to see on your website.

These are some fundamental points related to the implementation of pop-ups on your website. Make the best use possible of the applications available to generate substantial leads through pop-ups. You can do it!
